TangQiuHui- Red Ball Festival

Over the Chinese New Year, Christy and I, and some of our chinese friends went to the tangqiuhui fair. Translated literally I think it means sugar ball fair. Shan Zha- what we call Haw-berry in English is coated in a sugared glaze and put on a stick. They do the same thing with other fruits.
There were many different kinds of food from all over China- Wuhan and Tianjin and cheese from Inner Mongolia. We tried many different types of food and saw advertisments for lamb and camel meat! We also tried a hot pear drink... Which was great considering how cold it was!!!

HOT POT FEAST...

After the festival, we went to the market. Christy and I were allowed only to watch as the guys bought spices, seafood, noodles and vegetables to use in making Chinese hotpot. We headed back to our apartment and were told to "rest" and "relax" while the guys cleaned and prepared everything for hotpot.

How to prepare a hotpot feast: Take a pot of boiling hot water with spices and place it on the table. As you eat, place food into the pot to cook and eat it when it finishes cooking. Continue until you can’t eat anymore! Be sure to add lots of friends to enjoy the good food with!

As you can see, we didn't do a very good job of resting or staying out of the kitchen while the boys worked... but we did have lots of fun!

It was a special day in China- "Shiwu" the 15th day of the Lunar New Year and the final day of celebration. We ended our celebration by eating 'tangyuan', a round, sweet dumpling with red bean in the middle. Traditionally, Chinese people eat round things at certain festivals. The roundness represents the family circle and unity. I am not particularly a fan of this dessert :) but I did try it…
